Tom Cruise
Virtually a star since his first leading role in the 1983 film Risky Business, Tom Cruise has been nominated for three Academy Awards and won three Golden Globe Awards. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1962, Cruise considered professional wrestling and life as a Catholic priest before pursuing his acting career. He has seen success in a range of films including Top Gun (1986), Rain Man (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), Jerry McGuire (1996) and Magnolia (1999). Cruise has also forayed in producing, and in 1993 partnered with his former talent agent Paula Wagner to form Cruise/Wagner Productions. The company has since co-produced several of Cruise's films.
Cruise married actress Nicole Kidman in 1990. Together they adopted two children, Isabella Jane and Connor Antony. The couple divorced in 2001. After a three-year relationship with actress Penélope Cruz, Cruise began dating actress Katie Holmes in 2005. The couple married in 2006 in Italy and have one child together: a daughter, Suri.
In addition to the praise Cruise has seen in his more than 25 years in the limelight, there has also been criticism, and Cruise has been criticized in particular for his staunch support of the Church of Scientology. However, controversial moves such as his public disapproval of Brooke Shield's use of anti-depressants (which he later apologized for) and his famous couch-jumping on The Oprah Winfrey Show did earn him the title of the world's most powerful celebrity in 2006, according to Forbes.
