Nicolas Sarkozy
Nicolas Sarkozy is the 26th and current president of France. Sarkozy's career in politics began in 1983, serving as the mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine until 2002. Sarkozy then served as interior minister from 2002-04 and as the minister of finances from 2004-07 under former President Jacques Chirac. Sarkozy went on to head the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) Party before eventually winning the party's bid for presidency. Sarkozy won the presidency after a run-off election against Socialist Party candidate Segolene Royal and assumed office on May 16, 2007.
As president, Sarkozy intends to renew a spirit of nationality and pride in France by reforming the country's legal system. Sarkozy's progressive achievements in political office include a focus on the empowering of immigrants and women. As president, he has given three appointments in his Cabinet to women of African-immigrant and Muslim background, the first time this has happened in France's history.
Nicolas Sarkozy de Nagy-Bocsa was born on January 28, 1955, to parents of mixed ethnic and racial background, his father a Hungarian catholic and his mother from French Catholic and Greek Jewish descent. Sarkozy was raised in France and received his bachelor's degree in 1973. He later received a master's degree in private law and an advanced master's (DEA) degree in Business law. After passing the bar, Sarkozy became a lawyer specializing in business and family law. Sarkozy has three sons from two prior marriages. Sarkozy and his third wife, former model Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, were married February 2, 2008.
