Laura Bush
The prolonged presidential election gave America plenty of time to get to know George W. Bush.
But how much do we know about the first lady, Laura Bush?
Born in Midland, Texas, in 1946, Laura Bush majored in education at
Southern Methodist University. She then earned a library science degree from the University of Texas.
She worked as a public school teacher in Houston, Dallas and Austin from 1968 to 1977. She met George W. in 1977 and they were married
three months later. Laura and George's twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, were born in 1981 and are
named after their grandmothers.
Bush has devoted her life to the causes of education, literacy and breast cancer awareness.
During her tenure as First Lady of Texas, Bush founded the
Texas Book Festival, the Family Literacy Initiative and the Ready to Read program.
"Only books have the ability to simultaneously shut out the world and open it up," Bush said.
