Alan Greenspan
As Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, it is often stated that Alan Greenspan is second only to the President when it comes to the most powerful person in the United States. An ABCNews article stated that while almost half the adults in the United States cannot name the Vice President, nine out of 10 know who Greenspan is. Since 1987, Greenspan has headed the seven-member board, fighting to keep inflation and unemployment down and increase consumer confidence in the economy. In 1998, his hard work seemed to have paid off, as unemployment reached a 24-year low, inflation hit an 11-year low and consumer confidence was the highest it had been in 30 years.
Born in 1926, Greenspan lived through the Great Depression and served as President Gerald Ford's top economic advisor during the economic struggles of the mid-'70s. He studied music at Juillard and formed his own economic consulting firm with bond trader William Townsend. However, the nation's recent economic downturn has proved challenging for Greenspan, as political commentators continue to speculate on the coming recession and the American public has its eye on Greenspan's every move.
